Although high rise living in Hong Kong is the norm, many families do own pets. If your pet is an important part of your family life then it can continue to be so in Hong Kong. Typically pets imported from the US, Canada, UK , Australia and New Zealand do not require to be quarantined after arrival in Hong Kong. However, you must have a license to import a pet obtainable from the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries.
Before making the decision to bring your pet to Hong Kong, check if any quarantine period is necessary for your pet when you eventually move back to your home country after your assignment. If you take a pet back to the UK for instance, your pet will be in quarantine for 6 months unless the laws change.

If you have a large or active dog, you should consider walking opportunities when choosing a residential area. The south side of Hong Kong Island and the New Territories offer more open areas for walking. You can walk your dog most places, but pooper-scoopers (or good old-fashioned newspapers) are necessary. You will soon find walks and pathways, parks and jogging routes, as well as places where you can access hillsides and open areas once you have gotten to know your area. Hong Kong is built up but there are lots of green spots and walking areas once you become familiar with them.
It is uncommon to have a garden, so your dog will not be able to run free. Many families have live-in household help and so the domestic helper will also be able to help with the care of your pets.
