Hong Kong is a relatively small place and most areas are easily accessed by an excellent system of public transportation which is modern, safe, efficient and inexpensive.
Many of the residential areas are just minutes from the main commercial districts making commutes fast and easy. Commuters living in the Mid-Levels and working in Central enjoy the ultimate experience of being able to travel to and from work via the longest series of escalators in the world, in just a few minutes.
However, the public transportation system is not perfect. It can be very busy during rush hours and it can also be uncomfortable waiting for buses or travelling on ferries in hot and humid weather.
The Hong Kong Government taxes motorists heavily in order to discourage owning a car and driving in Hong Kong. The "New Car Tax", which is equal to 100 percent of the cost of the car, makes having a car in Hong Kong expensive. Car insurance, road tax, parking and fuel are also costly.
Many people move to Hong Kong and live quite happily without the expense of a car, whilst others prefer the convenience of their own vehicle. Alot depends on your budget, where you live, your office location, and if you have children that need to to be taken to after-school activities.
If you decide to buy a car, it's fast and easy to register the car, get a driving license and car insurance as long as you have a Hong Kong ID card and an overseas driving license.
Note: All monetary units are espressed in Hong Kong dollars unless otherwise noted. |
