COOKING AND FOOD
 To Market
 Wine

Most of the food you see in Hong Kong is imported and only a small percentage is produced locally. You will find all that all your familiar basic foods are readily available, although supermarkets lack the range and variety of the best supermarkets in the US or UK. There are a few delicatessens and specialist stores for hard to find items.

Living in HK offers a chance to learn about Asian Cooking. Local markets are filled with an impressive array of fresh fruits, vegetables, fish, herbs and spices.

Locals buy their food fresh on a daily basis from ‘wet markets’. As well as fruits, vegetables, herbs and spices these markets sell meat, seafood, fish and live poultry. Asians like things to be really fresh so you will see live poultry and seafood alive and waiting to be sold. The YWCA and the American Women’s Association (AWA) run an Asian cooking classes and some of them include trips to the market to learn about the local ingredients.

Note: Monetary units are expressed in Hong Kong dollars unless otherwise noted.
